Apps Not Running in the Background on Android? Here’s How to Fix It

Every so often, some of you contact our support team because 4K Video Downloader for Android is not running in the background when you minimise the application window or exit the app. This happens owing to the Android smartphone settings, or more specifically when the default battery optimisation is on. Apps that continuously run in the background can drain the battery quickly, so Android tries to strike a balance between functionality and battery preservation.

Android uses a priority system to manage background tasks. Apps that provide critical functions like messaging, alarms, or location tracking may be allowed to run in the background more freely than non-essential apps. This prioritisation helps ensure that important background tasks can continue to operate.

In this article, we’ll show you how to turn off the settings that block the background run of Android apps, the Android version of 4K Video Downloader included.

How to Fix Apps Not Running in the Background on Android: Tips

By default, Android allows apps to run in the background, but the operating system also implements certain restrictions and optimisations to manage battery life and device performance.

However, there are some ways you can influence how apps run in the background on your Android device:

Disable Battery Optimisation

The path can be slightly different depending on your Android smartphone. Here’s how to do that on Xiaomi:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Head over to Battery & performance and click on it.

  3. Find App battery saver and hit it.

  1. Find the app you're looking for in the list of applications or enter the app’s name into the search field.

  2. Click on the app.

  3. Choose No restrictions.

It will allow you to let the app run in the background mode, and your phone won’t save battery when running the app.

Another way to do this:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Go to Apps.

  3. Head over to Manage apps.

  1. Find the app you're looking for in the list of applications or enter the app’s name into the search field.

  2. Click on the app.

  3. Choose No restrictions.

On other Android smartphones, the path can be like this:

  1. Head over to Settings.

  2. Choose Apps & notifications (Apps).

  3. Open All apps.

  4. Select the app that’s not working in the background.

  5. Hit Battery.

  6. Disable Battery optimization.

The last step can also be called ‘Don’t optimize’ or ‘Allow in the background’, depending on your device.

Alternatively, you might need to do this:

  1. Head over to Settings -> Apps again.

  2. Open the app that needs a network connection to run in the background.

  3. Hit Mobile data & Wi-Fi and ensure that the app can access Wi-Fi and Mobile data in the background and while using VPN.

Set Background Process Limit

This feature limits the amount of processes that run in the background. We have to do exactly the opposite—lift this limit.

Important note: Developer options are for development and testing purposes. Any changes may lead to changes in phone performance and stability.

  1. Go to Settings -> Developer options.

  2. Tap Advanced -> Background process limit.

  3. Disable the background process limit (you can find it near the end of the list). If you don’t have the option to disable it on your smartphone, choose Standard or the biggest limit set in the settings.

However, we recommend using the battery optimisation ways.

More Tips to Make the Apps Run in the Background on Android
