2010年7月YouTube宣佈了開始支持4K分辯率的視頻，也就是4096x3072分辯率。現時，YouTube上可以觀看數千個4K分辯率的視頻。

官方的視頻樣品在名為4k分辯率的播放清單中。也可以通過"4k分辯率”、"4k”或"4096p”等關鍵字進行蒐索。至於官方術語，最後一項說法其實並不準確，因為480p、720p、1080p等都指的是縱向分辯率。無論如何，一些4K分辯率的視頻還在標籤下上傳。

在2000年代中期，市場上開始出現4k攝像機。第一款這樣的設備是加拿大Dalsa Corporation Company公司的Dalsa Origin攝像機。它可以錄製4096x2048分辯率的16比特RAW格式視頻。這種格式可傳達非常多樣的品質。以前，數碼攝像機的色彩格式只有8比特、10比特或12比特Dalsa Origin攝像機所錄視頻可以以400MB/秒的速度存儲在外置儲存設備。

2007年，Red Digital Cinema相機公司發佈了一款Red One相機。此款相機擁有1200萬點數CMOS感測器，視頻分辯率達到4096×2304，拍攝速度30fps。2011年初，公司又推出了Red Epic相機，運用1400萬點數感測器，視頻分辯率達到了5120×2700。

數位單眼相機(DSLR)

很多新款的数位單反相機，即使不是PRO的，也都使用超過1200萬點數的感測器，能够拍出分辯率達到1920×1080的視頻。比如尼康D3100相機，拍出的照片點數達到了4608×3072，而佳能EOS550D相機的感測器更是能够拍出5184×3456點數。

Formats and Playback of 4K Videos

YouTube stores several formats and resolutions for each video, and 4K Video Downloader Plus parses and downloads what’s available.
